September 30, 1994: SFSU students Jeff Schwartz and Dan Wong put FogCam online, inspired by the Trojan Room coffee pot camera at Cambridge. 1995: Dan Wong photographs the campus with a Connectix QuickCam; those images are the oldest surviving FogCam-era pictures. August 2019: the creators announce a shutdown after 25 years, #SaveTheFogCam follows, and on August 28 SFSU takes the camera over. Fans quietly save a month of frames during the scare: 126,862 of them, the only archive that existed. October 2022: an SFSU video shows the camera itself, a Logitech C920-family webcam on a small tripod, the only known photo of the rig. July 14, 2026: Fog-Bank starts capturing every frame FogCam publishes.
